1. This is a useful blood test in pregnant women as it checks the baby's risk for having certain genetic & birth defects. Pregnant women with high levels of AFP may develop defects in the baby's spinal cord & brain. This test is usually done between 15 to 20 weeks of pregnancy.
2. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is  also a tumor marker used to detect and diagnose certain cancers and liver diseases.
